Yemaya is an annual SULS journal featuring a variety of text types, covering topics all around the world and written by law students and otherwise, with one common concern: women. Contemporary dialogue is filled with catch phrases of gender equality, empowerment of women and equal opportunity, but how well do women fare in the legal profession, before the legal system and in other areas of the world today?
In preparation for my own submission, I interviewed a tenancy solicitor at Macquarie Legal Centre this week. Her team was involved with a new initiative this year to educate Silverwater Women's Prison inmates of their housing rights and responsibilities, answer questions and provide advice from a legal perspective. I can't wait to cover her experiences in my Yemaya submission, and also looking forward to chatting with a domestic violence advocacy lawyer this Wednesday!
It's not too late to think of making a contribution to Yemaya. This year's theme is INTERSEXTIONS. Send through your short story, book review, poetry, artwork, essay or other creative piece to women@suls.org.au by Monday 6th June.
