Education

Our education is a powerful tool and it has the potential to unlock meaningful opportunities. However, Law School can be overwhelming and stressful for more reasons than simply ‘not knowing exam techniques’. Our team is passionate about confronting the hidden issues and the universal concerns around the ‘one size fits all’ model of University education. We hope to increase the dialogue surrounding mental health and personal wellbeing and the implications it has for empowering learning. We hope to encourage curiosity and improve the worldly understanding of students through greater diversity in education talks. We hope to provide different mediums for students to creatively express ideas. Ultimately, our vision for the upcoming year is to bring the attention back on the student body and address both our academic and non-academic needs as each student deserves a meaningful and well-rounded university experience.

Law School Basics Panel Series 2022: Assignment Techniques - Recording

Our second Law School Basics Panel of the year focused on the topic of ‘Assignment Techniques’. A big thank you to our panellists (Dr Tanya Mitchell, Mr Adam Waldman, Matthew Thomas Joyce) for their valuable advice and insights on the questions below:

  1. Noting the different formats of assignments at law school, what are the differences between problem question and research essay. How would you prepare for them differently?

  2. How would you structure a problem question assignment as opposed to a research essay? Are they similar?

  3. How much time do coordinators expect it will take to complete assignments?

  4. What tricks and techniques within the writing of the assignment will help me do better

  5. When do I need to do additional research or reading to do well in an assignment?

  6. Do I need to cite everything I write? What if it’s an original thought or my own analysis?

  7. Should I just write what I think the marker wants to read?

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Law Lounge on Tuesday 22 March 2022 for this event! The Zoom recording for this event can also be accessed here. Please do not hesitate to contact education@suls.org.au if you have any questions.

Law School Basics Panel Series 2022: Study Techniques - Recording

Our first Law School Basics Panel, presented by SULS and Allen & Overy, took place online on Wednesday 2 March 2022. Focusing on the topic of ‘Study Techniques’, we were able to hear from our panellists (Associate Professor Penelope Crossley, Dr Nikila Kaushik, Olivia Donovan and Sheree Kuan) on the following questions:

1. What are some reliable study methods to equip students for a productive semester?
2. Should I stick to the Unit of Study outline or read beyond it? What is the actual value of doing all the readings?
3. What exactly are scaffolds and are they necessary? How can I make my notes practical and easy to understand when exam time comes around?
4. What should I do when I fall behind or feel overwhelmed with content in tutorials and lectures?
5. What is the difference between a casebook and a textbook? Is one more efficient than the other?
6. Do you have any tips and strategies to stay motivated and combating burnout throughout the semester?

The Zoom recording for the hybrid panel can be found here (Passcode: bZ.DE2D6). If you have any questions or issues with access, please email education@suls.org.au.
